Benfica sign R.d.T. from Real Madrid
Portuguese Primeira Liga champions Benfica have signed Raúl de Tomás from Real Madrid.
The striker has spent the past two seasons on loan at Rayo Vallecano, scoring 24 goals in 32 Segunda División appearances in 2017-18 as he helped the Madrid minnows gain promotion to La Liga. He then scored 14 goals in 33 top flight games this past season but couldn’t save Rayo from relegation.
De Tomás joined Real Madrid as a 9-year-old, coming through the youth ranks, playing for both the C and B teams but without making his debut for the first team.
Prior to spending two years on loan at Rayo Vallecano, Raúl de Tomás had loan spells in the second tier at Córdoba in 2015-16 and Real Valladolid the following season.
Last month, Real Madrid announced the signing of Luka Jović from Eintracht Frankfurt, and with Karim Benzema already at the club, De Tomás was not expected to be considered a first team squad player for the La Liga giants for next season.
Instead, the 24-year-old joins the Portuguese giants who have produced a number of stars over the years. Although neither club disclosed the transfer fee, Marca are reporting that Benfica have paid €20 million for the striker’s services.
