Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool: Barça have one foot in final

FC Barcelona are close to booking their place in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League final following their 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday evening.

Luis Suárez poked home from close range shortly before the half-hour mark following an excellent whipped cross fro Jordi Alba from outside the penalty area.

The English Premier League side saw lots of possession and territory but rarely caused Marc-André ter Stegen too many difficulties in the Barcelona goal. The most spectacular of note was perhaps when the German tipped Mohamed Salah’s 20-yard effort around the post, eight minutes into the second half.

Liverpool were done on the counter attack in the 75th minute when Suárez  hit the crossbar only for the ball to rebound kindly for Lionel Messi to walk home. Virgil van Dijk could be seen watching the Argentine move towards the ball whilst the defender stood there. The same could be said of the Dutch international for Barcelona’s opener.

There was nothing van Dijk nor the Liverpool defence could do five minutes later though when Messi scored an astonishing 30-yard free kick into Alisson’s top corner. Liverpool failed to score an away goal ahead of the return leg at Anfield next Tuesday.

In the other semi-final tie, Dutch giants Ajax beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in London, England.
