Barcelona 3-0 Chelsea: La Liga side safely through to Champions League 1/4s
Barcelona ran out convincing 3-0 winners over Chelsea in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League second round tie at Camp Nou this evening, progressing 4-1 on aggregate.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring with his 100th goal in the competition inside the opening three minutes in a game that the runaway La Liga leaders dominated from start to finish.
Having drawn in the first leg at Stamford Bridge three weeks ago, 1-0 was not going to be a safe scoreline to carry throughout the game, but any doubt in which team was going to progress was over after 20 minutes when Ousmane Dembélé smashed home.
Lionel Messi completed the drubbing in the second half to make the scoreline 3-0.
Marc-André ter Stegen was forced into a couple of saves but the result never looked in doubt after Messi’s early opener from a tight angle that former Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be disappointed to have conceded. The Belgium number one may also have been disappointed not to have prevented Dembélé’s powerful effort finding the net.
The one disappointing piece of news from this evening’s game is that midfielder Sergio Busquets limped off the field on the hour mark. He was replaced by André Gomes.
Barcelona are joined by Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester City, Liverpool, Sevilla and AS Roma in the quarter-finals of this season’s competition, with the draw taking place on Friday.
