Andrés Iniesta suffers hamstring injury
Barcelona playmaker Andrés Iniesta suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of their 1-0 win over Atlético at Camp Nou on Sunday.
The midfielder initially appeared to pull up with the injury on the 20-minute mark but continued until finally being replaced by André Gomes on 34 minutes.
Iniesta will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.
Prior to the experienced midfielder leaving the field, Lionel Messi had given Barcelona the lead midway through the first half with a free kick that was his 600th career goal.
Ernesto Valverde’s side held onto the valuable three points that now gives them an eight-point lead over Atléti in second with 11 games to play.
Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitić and Philippe Coutinho did an excellent job in controlling possession for the hosts even after the loss of Iniesta, as the visitors rarely troubled Marc-André ter Stegen in the Barcelona goal.
Valverde has a number of central midfielders to choose from in his team should Andrés Iniesta be out for any long period of time. However, there’s no doubting his presence would be lost in the starting lineup.
