Barcelona sell Javier Mascherano

Barcelona have agreed to sell experienced Argentine defender Javier Mascherano to Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune.

The 33-year-old has spent seven-and-a-half-years at Camp Nou since joining from Liverpool for €24 million in 2010.

Mascherano made a total of 334 games for Barcelona in all competitions winning 18 trophies during his time with the Spanish giants.  Among foreign players at the club, only Lionel Messi, Philip Cocu and Dani Alves have made more appearances.

The 141-time Argentine midfielder originally joined as a holding midfielder but was converted to centre-back by Pep Guardiola where he has spent much of his time, including the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.

Barcelona have already replaced Mascherano in defence with the signing of Colombian Yerry Mina from Palmeiras earlier this month.  The 1.95 metre tall centre-back is yet to make his debut for the Catalans but may see some action in the coming weeks following a hamstring injury to Thomas Vermaelen which is expected to keep the Belgian international out for around two weeks.
