Thomas Vermaelen out for two weeks
Barcelona will be without centre-back Thomas Vermaelen for around two weeks after the club today confirmed that the Belgium international has suffered a hamstring injury in his left leg.
The defender suffered his injury in the 41st minute during Barcelona’s 5-0 win at Real Betis on Sunday.
Vermaelen was replaced by Samuel Umtiti just before the break with the French centre-back only just returning from an injury himself.
It comes as a devastating blow to the 32-year-old whose Barcelona career has been blighted by injuries. He made just one appearance in his first season at Camp Nou following his £15 million move from Arsenal in 2014 due to a serious hamstring injury.
Thomas Vermaelen had been in a good run of form after replacing the injured Umtiti in November, making eight La Liga appearances, five in the Copa del Rey and Sporting Club of Portugal in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona have Samuel Umtiti back to partner Gerard Piqué in central defence, but also new signing Yerry Mina.
