Girona 2-2 Atlético Madrid: Griezmann sent off as debutants draw
Antoine Griezmann was sent off as La Liga newcomers Girona pulled off a surprise 2-2 draw with Atlético Madrid on Sunday evening.
One of Girona’s new arrivals, Cristhian Stuani, had shocked the visitors twice in a space of four minutes with two headers to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
Atléti looked off the pace in the first half and the half-time scoreline did not flatter the Catalunyan side who are appearing in La Liga for the first time in their history this season.
Whilst Diego Simeone’s side saw more possession and territory after the break they were still failing to cause too many problems for Girona goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.
Midway through the second half, Antoine Griezmann broke through on goal and appeared to be brought down by the 36-year-old goalkeeper.
However, referee Juan Martínez Munuera adjudged the French star to have dived. Griezmann’s seemingly reacted with foul language in front of the official who duly showed him a straight red card.
This appears to spark life into the Madrid-based club, as well as Simeone bringing on forward Nicolás Gaitán for midfielder Gabi straight after, and Luciano Vietto for Fernando Torres in the final 18 minutes.
Ángel Correa had earlier replaced right-back Juanfran and it was the Argentine forward who brought Atlético back into the game with a fine 20-yard strike.
Five minutes from time José Giménez flicked home a free kick to equaliser for the visitors.
Girona could have snatched a winner in stoppage time but for the reaction of Jan Oblak in the Atléti goal. As it was the minnows held out for a famous point in their first-ever La Liga match.
